RAVENWOOD - Stepson of Mystery

THE RETURN OF
RAVENWOOD!

Airship 27 Productions & Cornerstone Book Publishers bring back another classic pulp hero from the 1930s in an all new collection of fast paced, macabre adventures of the supernatural.  Meet Ravenwood – Stepson of Mystery!

He is an orphan raised by a Tibetan mystic known only as the Nameless One.  As an Occult Detective he has no equal and is called upon by the authorities when they are challenged by supernatural mysteries.  One of the more obscure pulp characters, Ravenwood – The Stepson of Mystery appeared as a back-up feature in the pages of Secret Agent X magazine.  There were only five Ravenwood  stories ever written, all by his creator, the prolific pulp veteran, Frederick C. Davis.

Now he returns in this brand new series of weird adventures, beginning with this volume in which he combats Sun Koh, a lost prince of Atlantis, battles with monstrous Yetis in Manhattan and deals with murderous ghosts and zombie assassins.  Four of today’s finest pulp storytellers Frank Schildiner, B.C. Bell, Bill Gladman and Bobby Nash offer up a quartet of fast paced, bizarre thrillers that rekindle the excitement and wonder that were the pulps.

With a stunning cover by Bryan Fowler and dramatic interior illustrations by Charles Fetherolf, Ravenwood – Stepson of Mystery was designed by Rob Davis and edited by Ron Fortier.  Once again Airship 27 Productions presents pulp fans with another one-of-kind quality pulp reading experience like no other on the market today.

SAUNDERS JOINS AIRSHIP 27

IMARO CREATOR JOINS AIRSHIP 27 PRODUCTIONS

Charles R. Saunders, one of the most respected fantasy adventure writers in the field, has joined Airship 27 Productions to create a black pulp hero.  Saunders is best known for his series of novels featuring Imaro, the black warrior of an ancient, mythological Africa.  His work has been compared to being equal parts Robert E. Howard and J.R.R. Tolkien.

Saunders and Airship 27 Editor, Ron Fortier, have been friends for many years.  Saunders had been working for company which packages titles for Cornerstone Book Publishers as a proof-reader.  It was the beginning of his first exposure to the world of pulps.  One he enjoyed a great deal.  Enough to offer Fortier an idea for a novel featuring a 1930s black avenger along the lines of the Shadow and the Spider.

“I was ecstatic when Charles brought up the idea,” says Fortier.  “One of the less savory aspects of the pulps was their inherent racism.  The pulps of the 1930s reflected a prejudicial ignorance that was representative of the country’s attitude during those times.”  Today’s modern pulp writers and editors often grapple with this sensitive issue as whether or not to depict it accurately in their stories.  Some opt to ignore it altogether.
“So that was the challenge,” Fortier continues.  “Could Charles give us an African American hero and make it work in an authentic 1930’s New York setting?”

DAMBALLA, the name of the book, is Saunders’ response to that question. Cast in the mold of the classic pulp heroes, the noted author describes his new character as the 30s version of a well known cinema tough guy.  “Damballa, like John Shaft, ‘will risk his neck for his fellow man,’” says Saunders. “The difference is, Damballa wears a cloak instead of leather jacket, and uses both ancient African wisdom and modern science in his battle against injustice.”

Airship 27 Productions plans to release this ground breaking pulp thriller in the Spring of 2011.

TALES OF THE BAGMAN

TALES OF THE BAGMAN

(A New Hero in Old Chicago)

Airship 27 Productions & Cornerstone Book Publishers are happy to announce the release of their thirtieth title, TALES OF THE BAGMAN by B.C. Bell. This book features the debut of a brand new pulp hero, the Bagman, and he’s unlike any other crime buster you’ve ever seen before.

In the 1930s, Chicago was one of the fastest growing metropolises in the country. Situated on mighty Lake Michigan, it was the home to millions of hard working Americans looking to a better themselves. The Windy City was also shackled by its bootleg history, a time of violent gang wars that had permanently established a brutal underworld empire second to none. Corruption was the order of the day and both the police and government were in the pay of the mob bosses.

Frank “Mac” McCullough was a foot-soldier in one of the city’s toughest families until he was ordered to rough up his uncle; a decent man with a gambling problem. The innate decency in Mac rebelled and suddenly he found himself up against the very men he had once admired and followed. Determined to put an end to their lawlessness, he put a bag over his head as a crude disguise only to become labeled the Bagman by the press.

Now writer B.C. Bells tells the amazing stories of old Chicago’s most unique hero. Aided solely by a tough, black WW I veteran named Crankshaft, Mac wages war against the mobs in these fast pace, non-stop action tales pulp fans will cheer. “Bell’s writing is a terrific mix of pulp action and wry humor,” applauds Airship 27 Productions’ Ron Fortier. “It’s really a breath of fresh air in the pulp genre and we know our fans are going to love the Bagman.” Designed by Rob Davis, the book features nine illustrations by Kelly Everaert and a gorgeous cover by Laura Givens. Airship 27 Productions is thrilled to present pulpdom’s newest avenger, THE BAGMAN.

GIDEON CAIN

GIDEON CAIN - THE DEMON HUNTER

Airship 27 Productions & Cornerstone Book Publishers have teamed up with noted fantasy, science fiction author, Van Allen Plexico to bring to life a brand new sword wielding adventurer; Gideon Cain – The Demon Hunter. Originally conceived on an internet forum, this swashbuckling, globe trotting avenger is the result of half a dozen creative minds pooling their ideas and imaginations into bringing forth a tortured hero cast in a classic pulp mold.

During the famous Salem Witch Trials (1692-93) British born Puritan soldier, Gideon Cain aided the inquisitions, believing them to be just. Soon thereafter, God revealed to Cain that he and the righteous citizens of Salem had been duped by a cunning, ageless demon from Hell known as Azazel. The guilt of his actions weighs heavily on his conscience and rather than be driven mad by it, Gideon chooses to make atonement. Taking up his sword, the blade inscribed with holy runes, he bids farewell to his wife and children and departs on his sacred mission. Now he wanders the earth doing God’s work and destroying evil in whatever shape or guise it appears; his one consuming goal, to find and destroy Azazel.

Airship 27 Productions is thrilled to be bringing pulp fans this great new character written in the tradition of Robert E. Howard’s Solomon Kane. Here are seven exciting, action packed tales of the Demon Hunter by Scott Harris, Brian Zavitz, K.G.McAbee, Ian Watson, James Palmer, David Wright and Van Allen Plexico. Design and interior illustrations by Art Director Rob Davis with a painted cover by Davis and Shane Evans.

Airship 27 Productions & Cornerstone Book Publishers are excited to announce the release of their latest pulp anthology, BLACK BAT MYSTERY!

One of the most original heroes in all of pulpdom returns in four brand new gun-blazing adventures crammed packed with action and adventure. The mysterious Black Bat once again patrols the urban jungle, his targets, those who would prey on the weak the helpless. Crusading District Attorney, Anthony Quinn, was scarred and blinded by gangland hoods. When an experimental transplant operation restores his sight, it also grants him the ability to see in the dark! Allowing the public to continue believing he is a harmless, blind attorney, Quinn invents a new identity, that of the crime fighting avenger known as the Black Bat! With a trio of loyal aids, Carol Baldwin, Silk Kirby and Butch O’Leary, he launches his campaign against the forces of evil.

The Black Bat first appeared in the pages of his own magazine, Black Book Detective. The author was G.Wayman Jones. It would run for 62 issues from July 1939 to Winter 1953 and become one of the most popular pulp heroes ever created.

I.V. FROST

PROFESSOR I.V. FROST

Back in 1934, the publishing giant, Street & Smith found themselves frustrated on a monthly basis because their one dedicated mystery magazine, Clues, was forever being outsold by their competitor’s Black Mask. The boys at S & S did not like coming in second to anyone, after all they were the home of the pulp’s greatest crime fighters, The Shadow and Doc Savage. They desperately needed a new series that would attract more readers and turned to established writer, Donald Wandrei to fulfill that need.
Wandrei, a veteran pulp scribe, had been in successful in most fields, particular the weird horror genres and he set about inventing a truly unique, one-of-a-kind hero the likes of which no one had ever seen before, Prof. I.V. Frost.

Wandrei created the tall, thin, hatchet-faced “Ivy” Frost to be an American Sherlock Holmes; a brilliant scientific and analytical mind powered this eccentric character but he was also a man of action, capable of getting his hands dirty when the action heated up.
Like Holmes, Frost had an assistant but this one wasn’t some stodgy, ex-army doctor. Jean Moray was a sexy looking blonde who carried a .25 caliber derringer in her garter and possessed a genius I.Q. thus making her a fitting companion to the eccentric and colorful professor. Think Jean Harlow with a gun and that’s Miss Moray. During its run, Wandrei would pen eighteen Frost adventures.

Getting to write the new adventures of this pair is both a thrill and challenge. Each tale requires an even mix of both fantastic mystery and gun-blazing action. Too much of one and not enough of the other and it’s not I.V. Frost. It is this unique combination that sets him apart of all other pulp heroes. Writing for I.V. Frost is the start of a new and exciting journey of wondrous discovery for me and I hope you’ll tag along for the ride. Knowing Frost and Jean Moray, I can promise you it is going to be anything but dull.

HOW THE WEST WAS WEIRD

HOW THE WEST WAS WEIRD
Edited by Russ Anderson Jr.
Pulpwork Press
152 pages

There have been those critics who have been lamenting the supposed death of the “short story” in American literature. I would argue their alarm is a bit premature, as lately short pulp fiction (i.e. popular fiction of all genres) has not only been surviving quite well, but with books like this one, actual been getting strong. Gathered here are nine fun, extremely well written tales of the Wild West, all with a touch of the macabre. Some are better than others, but the fun of any anthology is that very potential inherent in multiple writers and their varied offering.

“Camazotz” by Josh Reynolds suffers a fatal flaw in that it’s too short and one wonders why it was even included. It’s a nifty idea of a cowboy trying to get out of Mexico with an Aztec mummy. Unfortunately no sooner does it get going then it’s over. Makes me wish the editor would have pestered Reynolds to expand it to a more satisfying length.

“Wyrm Over Diablo” by Joel Jenkins features a colorful pair of heroes that were so much fun to see in action, I’m hoping he had plans to use them again in the future. This was a non-stop action piece pitting a Native American gunfighter against a Cthulhu type monster that was thrilling stuff.

“Don Cuevo’s Curative” by Thomas Deja is my favorite. Deja’s tale of a spooky, thoughtful exorcist who is hired by a town to save a young possessed farm boy was skillfully laid out with intriguing, sympathetic characters. Deja’s style is laconic in that it doesn’t rush the story, pacing it carefully to a very rewarding finale. He’s a writer worth watching.

“The Town With No Name,” by Mike McGee is a comedic entry that never takes itself seriously. An emotional scarred outlaw is recruited to be the sacrificial lamb to the Devil on behalf of a dusty town of lost souls. How he accepts his role in their grand scheme and confronts Lucifer is reminiscent of the finer O’Henry tales.

“Sins Of The Past,” by Barry Reese features a 2oth Century masked avenger traveling back into time to put to rest a trouble spirit that is the cause behind a genuine “ghost town.”

“You Need To Know What’s Coming,” by Ian Mileham is easily the most frightening story in the collection, with a really creepy ending.

“Of All The Plague A Lover Bears,” by Derrick Ferguson not only has the most original title, it also presents the pulpiest tale in which a mystic gunslinger is hired to clean out a town full of flesh-eating zombies. This is the kind of gem I read anthologies for.

The book has two remaining stories, but quite honestly, neither belongs here. One features asteroid miners in space and the other about a small town handy man who meets the Devil on Halloween eve. They are both well written and enjoyable, but I take umbrage that when you set a theme for an anthology, stick to it. Just because the space cowboy wears a Stetson does not make it a “western”. Likewise the other tale, whose setting has no distinctiveness, could easily have taken place in the woods of Maine. Which is why I cry foul. Neither of these is a real “western.”

That said, HOW THE WEST WAS WEIRD, is a grand collection that is extremely entertaining and worth your support. In fact, I’m hoping it does well enough to warrant another volume. These are too much fun to end with just one outing.

JIM ANTHONY Vol Two THE HUNTERS

JIM ANTHONY-SUPER DETCTIVE
In THE HUNTERS

Airship 27 Productions and Cornerstone Book Publishers roll out their second volume starring the hero who is half-Irish, half-Comanche and All-American. Classic pulp hero, Jim Anthony; Super Detective returns in a brand new novel in two parts that pits him against all kinds of strange and legendary beasts. And in both cases he is accompanied by fanatical hunter, Russian Count Zaroff from the classic short story, The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell.

In part one, Death In Yellow, by Joshua Reynolds, Anthony and Zaroff square off against a group of savage Tibetan Yetis loose in the steel canyons of Manhattan. Why these creatures are here and who is behind their murderous rampage is a classic mystery that challenges the one and only Super Detective. Then in part two, On The Periphery of Legend, by Micah S. Harris, Anthony reluctantly accompanies the mad Russian on an expedition to a lost island in the South Pacific where dinosaurs still roam. But that’s not the most dangerous game in those time lost jungles.

Here are two amazing tales woven together into a classic pulp adventure that will test the mettle of our hero and his loyal companions! ROBIN HOOD - King of Sherwood

ROBIN HOOD – KING OF SHERWOOD

Airship 27 Productions & Cornerstone Book Publishers are proud to announce the release of Robin Hood – King of Sherwood, a brand new full length novel by I.A. Watson.

In 1190, two years after resting the crown from his father, Henry II, Richard the Lionhearted departed France for the Holy Lands and the Third Crusade. He left behind regents, Hugh, Bishop of Durham and his chancellor, William de Longchamp. But his younger brother, Prince John, lusted after the crown and saw Richard’s absence as a golden opportunity to seize control. John began a program of heavy taxation that threatened to destroy the social-economic stability of the England.

While the royals conspired against each other, it was the people of the land who suffered. Working under inhumane laws, they became no more than indentured slaves to the landed gentry. Amidst this age of turmoil and pain, there arose a man with the courage to challenge the aristocracy and fight for the weak and helpless. He was an outlaw named Robin of Loxley and how he became the champion of the people is a time worn legend that has entertained readers young and old.

Now, I.A. Watson brings his own vivid imagination to the saga, setting it against the backdrop of history but maintaining the iconic elements that have endeared the tale of Robin Hood throughout the ages. It is a fresh and rousing retelling of an old legend, imbuing it with a modern sensibility readers will applaud. The book features a stunning painted cover by professional artist, Mike Manley and black and white interior illustrations by the book’s designer, Rob Davis.

THE MASKED RIDER

PRESS RELEASE MASKED RIDER

SADDLE UP FOR ADVENTURE

Airship 27 Productions & Cornerstone Book Publishers are saddling up to bring their readers three rip-roaring yarns of gun-blazing justice from out of the Old West. One of the hallmark genres of the early pulps were the many western titles available to readers. Heroes like the Masked Rider and many others rode the plains month after month in wild and wooly six-gun tales.

In the years immediately following the Civil War, the land west of the great Mississippi River was a lawless frontier being shaped by the courageous men and women who ventured there in hopes of finding a better life. What they found was a vast wilderness exploited by outlaws, drifters and cattle barons who made their own law at the end of a gun. Caught in the middle were the brave and noble Native American people, struggling to survive against this tide of so-called civilization.

A rare breed of men took on the challenge of bringing justice the west; men like the mysterious Masked Rider, Virgil Earp and Wild Bill Hickok. These were men who cast their long shadows over western history and went on to become legends. Now writers Eric Jones, Tommy Hancock and Aaron Smith bring us their adventures in three fast paced, no-holds barred shoot’em ups wherein it’s good versus evil on the dusty streets and rolling plains of this big country.

The Masked Rider and his blood-brother, Blue Hawk, must stop a gang of outlaws from taking over an entire town in The Raid on Granite Gap, while Virgil Earp walks a gauntlet of blood to rescue his kidnapped wife in Crossing Contention, and finally Wild Bill tries to stop two men of honor from destroying each other in The Long Trail of Vengeance. This title features a cover by Rob Davis and Shane Evans with interior illustrations by Nick Miller.

So load your six shooters, pilgrims and saddle up for western action Airship 27 style; Pulp Fiction for a New Generation!
