THE DEAD SHERIFF - Holster Full of Death

AIRSHIP 27 PRODUCTIONS
Presents Its 200th Title
MARK JUSTICE’S THE DEAD SHERIFF # 3
Holster Full of Death
By
Fred Adams Jr.

Over a eleven years ago, writer Ron Fortier and artist Rob Davis partnered to create a new publishing venture that devoted itself to producing New Pulp novels and anthologies featuring classic pulp characters from the 30s and 40s. That outlandish idea they named Airship 27 Productions. Since that time, Airship 27 has become an energetic part of the pulp community, not only revitalizing classic pulp figures such as Secret Agent X, Domino Lady and Captain Hazzard, but newer creations as well such the late Mark Justice’s weird western hero, the Dead Sheriff.

The mysterious Master has been seeking the half-breed Indian Sam who rode with the Dead Sheriff as his companion Cheveyo. All of which is a ruse, as the fable zombie lawman is nothing more than a puppet corpse manipulated by Sam through the use of a magic amulet; an amulet Sam stole from one of the Master’s agents.

When the Great Castwell’s traveling magic show appears claiming to have the Dead Sheriff as one of its acts, the Master dispatches the demonic twins Damon and Emile Loizeux to investigate. They discover that Castwell is a fraud and his Dead Sheriff merely an actor in disguise. Still, if allowed to continue, the show will ultimately attract Sam and his pal, journalist Richard O’Malley. Thus the bait is put on full display setting up a confrontation that will be both horrific and cataclysmic.

“After releasing the first Dead Sheriff novel several years ago to honor a promise I made my friend Mark Justice, I then went on the finish the second he had begun before his passing,” reports Airship 27 Productions’ Managing Editor, Ron Fortier. “With it completed, we made the decision to keep the series alive (pun intended) if we could find other of our stable writers willing to do Dead Sheriff tales. Right out of the gate we got one of the best.”

Veteran pulp writer Fred Adams Jr. creates a fast paced weird western thriller featuring the characters created by the late Mark Justice adding to the saga of the west most bizarre hero, the Dead Sheriff. Airship 27 Art Director Rob Davis provides the nine black and white interior illustrations and Chris Rawding the truly beautiful cover. A special limited collector’s edition of the book debut at the recently held Pikeville Comic & Toy Collection in Kentucky. The first copy was presented to Mrs. Norma Kay Justice, Mark’s widow. And now it has the distinction of officially being the company’s grand 200th release!

BROTHER BONES - The Beginning

REDBUD STUDIO presents
BROTHER BONES – The Beginning

Redbud Studio’s Managing Editor and Publisher, Rob Davis is thrilled to announce his studio will soon begin production on the first ever Brother Bones graphic novel by New Pulp writer Ron Fortier.

One of the most popular fictional figures in New Pulp, the character debut years ago from Airship 27 Productions in a collection of seven stories by Fortier, “Brother Bones – The Undead Avenger.” It was then followed up with a full length novel by Roman Leary, “Brother Bones – Six Days of the Dragon.” Fortier then completed two additional collections. “Brother Bones – Tapestry of Blood” and “Brother Bones – City of Lost Souls.” In that time several short Brother Bones strips were offered.  “Needle Justice,” was a short 8 pg tale with art by Joe Arnold and has appeared in various black and white comic anthologies.  “Bullets of Jude” was a 24 pg single from Redbud with art by John Polacek.

Whereas the actual origin of the character was only related in the first book collection. Something Fortier had hoped to change and so he wrote a 130 pg graphic novel that does just that. The challenge was finding the right artist to bring that story to visual life. “In the end, I decided to put the word out on Facebook,” Fortier reports. “My hope was if I cast a wide enough net, someone out there would either respond or connect me with an artist.” A few days later, Florida based artist Cesar Feliciano, suggested to Fortier that he contact New York artist Jim O’Riley. After exchanging a few e-mails, O’Riley agreed to take on the project.

O’Riley will pencil and ink the Fortier’s script while Redbud Studio head, Rob Davis will letter and edit. Once done, the studio will print the book via Amazon.

Jim O’Riley is a freelance indie comic and sketch card artist.  He has done sketch cards for Topps and Upper Deck working on such properties as Star Wars Master Works, The Last Jedi, Solo, The Walking Dead, Stranger Things, Marvel premiere, Thor Ragnarock, DeadPool, Xmen Ultra Fleer just to name a few.  He has also illustrated indie comics for Pilot Studios, Crazy Monkey Ink, Limitless Comics, and Industry veteran inker Mark Mckennas virtual inks inc., on various projects such as covers and interior work. “I fell from the womb with pencil in hand and have been drawing on and off ever since,” he says.  In the 90s O’Riley laid down the pencil to start a family and in 2016 started back with art. He has participated in comic cons from NYCC to All Star and C2E2.  Hands down Baltimore is his favorite and he is am looking forward to returning this year.

In regards to this project, “I am honored to be given the opportunity to work on Brother Bones along side Ron and Rob.  I have been looking for a script to sink my teeth into and I have to say the universe thankfully fated this one to me.  A special thanks to Cesar for introducing Ron and I.  It will be a challenge for sure and in the end I hope readers enjoy it and I do the story honors.”

Fortier’s own reactions were no less enthusiastic. “After seeing Jim’s early sketched of the characters from the story, I was simply bowled over. Not only is he a gifted artist, his style is perfectly suited for this kind of dark, creepy tale of mobsters and ghouls. Working with him is going to be a real treat.”

Fortier is a comics and pulps writer/editor best known for his work on the Green Hornet comic series and Terminator – Burning Earth with Alex Ross.  He won the Pulp Factory Award for Best Pulp Short Story of 2011 for “Vengeance Is Mine,” which appeared in Moonstone’s The Avenger – Justice Inc. and in 2012 for “The Ghoul,” from the anthology Monster Aces. He was awarded Pulp Grand Master in 2017 by the Pulp Factory. He is the Managing Editor of Airship 27 Productions, a New Pulp Fiction publisher and writes the continuing adventures of both his own character, Brother Bones – the Undead Avenger and the classic pulp hero, Captain Hazzard – Champion of Justice.

Rob Davis began his professional art career doing illustrations for role-playing games in the late 1980’s.  He began lettering and inking, then penciling comics for a number of small black and white comics publishers- most notably for Eternity Comics, which eventually became Malibu Comics in the 1990’s, on their book Scimidar with writer R.A. Jones. He eventually worked at both DC and Marvel on likeness intensive comics like TV adaptations of “Quantum Leap” and Star Trek’s’s many incarnations mostly on the Deep Space Nine for Malibu. After industry implosion in the late 1990’s Rob picked up work on video games, advertising illustration and T-shirt design as well as some small press comics like Roby of Sherwood for Caliber. Rob continues to do the odd self-published comic book as well as publisher and designer for his small-press production Redbud Studio. Rob is Art Director, Designer and Illustrator for Airship 27 Productions. Rob is the recipient of the Pulp Factory Award “Best Interior Illustrations” in 2010 for his work on “Sherlock Holmes – Consulting Detective”and has been nominated for the same award every year since. He works and lives in central Missouri with his wife and two children.

FRED ADAMS JR. - Pulp Writer

AIRSHIP 27 PRODUCTIONS
Presents
FRED ADAMS JR. PULP WRITER

Airship 27 Productions is proud to showcase the work of New Pulp’s most talented and prolific writer, Fred Adams Jr.  A retired college teacher, Adams burst on the New Pulp scene several years ago with his novel “Hitwolf,” from Airship 27 Productions. It tells the story of a Green Beret captured by Mob in the 1970s and turned into a werewolf assassin.

“The concept is so what pulp is all about,” claims Airship 27 Productions Managing Editor, Ron Fortier, “that when I first read the concept I was euphoric. We couldn’t publish it fast enough. Later Fred sent me his very first novel, a mystery entitled, ‘Dead Man’s Melody,’ and we happily put that out.” What Fortier didn’t realize at the time was both books were intended to be the first entries in on-going series.

By the time Adams had submitted “Six-Gun Terrors,” a story about two Texas cowboys who encounter supernatural monsters, the writer’s master goal had become obvious.  “He wanted to produce as many on-going series as he was capable of writing,” Fortier explains.

Following on the heels of those first three series debuts, Adams then offered up C.O. Jones, a World War II veteran who, during the war years, belonged to an elite squad that dealt primarily with magical threats to the Allies.  After several C.O. Jones novels, came
“The Eye of Quang Chi,” a mystery set in San Francisco during the turn of the century and starring the co-joined Chinese-American Smith Brothers.

Adams latest pulp series features Ike Mars, a 1950s private eye who was struck twice by lightning. The result of these near-death events left his face malleable enough that he can mold his features to look like other people for a short time. “Shades of the Avenger,” thought Fortier, when editing the first Ike Mars manuscript.

It became clear to Fortier and Airship 27 Art Director, Rob Davis, that Adams prodigious volume of great pulp stories should be showcased in a way as to draw attention to all these various series. The answer to that challenge was to produce a “sampler” collection and they put the idea to Adams. He was only too happy to participate and thus, the new “Fred Adams Jr. – Pulp Writer” features six brand new pulp thrillers culled from his current six on-going Airship 27 series.

“We had a blast putting this book together,” Fortier sums up. “Rob did all the interior illustrations and the cover. It is our hope the book will show fans of his work some of the other series they may missed, as well as make him lots of new readers.”

The astounding epilogue, according to Fortier, is that Adams is currently creating a seventh series. “Fred Adams Jr. is pulp writing machine!”

BULLDOG DRUMMOND - On Poisoned Ground

AIRSHIP 27 PRODUCTIONS
Presents
THE RETURN OF BULLDOG DRUMMOND

Airship 27 Productions is thrilled to announce the return of one of pulpdom’s most well known heroes, Bulldog Drummond, in “On Poisoned Ground” by writer I.A. Watson.

London 2018 - Upon his discharge from the military, Captain Hugh “Bulldog” Drummond finds civilian life boring. He post an ad in the London Times explaining his desire to find new adventures. Much to his surprise, he gets much more than he could have ever bargained for and soon finds himself battling an evil genius bent on destroying all of London. This is a threat he can’t possibly win alone and soon he has recruited his former S.A.S team, unique men with special skills that just might save the day.

“This is  a brand new version of a classic hero, reinvented for our times and jam-packed with suspense, thrills and danger enough to fill a half dozen books,” reports Airship 27 Productions’ Managing Editor Ron Fortier. “The original Bulldog Drummond was created by H.C. McNeile and published under his pen name "Sapper". Following McNeile's death in 1937, the novels were continued by Gerard Fairlie. The character has appeared in novels, short stories, on the stage, in films, on radio and television, and in graphic novels.”

Last year Fortier was approached by one of his Airship 27 writers from India who was a fan of the character and inquired if it would be possible to revive him as a New Pulp hero. Fortier immediately reached out to British author, I.A. Watson, a writer known for his exhaustive research in any project he undertakes. “Ian thought the idea was worth pursuing and ultimately discovered the property was indeed public domain,” Fortier continues. “After several long letters on how to do the character properly, both of us agreed a new, modern interpretation was called for. At which point I gave Ian the green light to write the first adventure in what we hope will be a long running series at Airship 27 Productions.”

“Bulldog Drummond – On Poisoned Ground,” features black and white interior illustrations by professional graphic illustrator, Howard Simpson, and sports a wonderful cover by Canadian Ted Hammond. The book design was by Art Director Rob Davis. The story is a roller-coaster ride of action and adventure. Fortier concludes, “Once you open page one, you will not be able to put this book down.”

Writers I.A. Watson, S. Subramanian, Fred Adams Jr. and Dexter Fabi have created thrilling new adventures that will challenge the detective duo in the most bizarre ways ever imagined.

A unique element of this volume is the cover by Michael Youngblood.  As Airship 27 Productions Manager explains, “For years, Sydney Paget was considered the premier Sherlock Holmes artist having done the illustrations for Arthur Conan Doyle’s original tales when they appeared in The Strand Magazine. Many of these are just as familiar as the stories themselves.”

Since the conception of the Consulting Detective series at Airship 27, Art Director Rob Davis has handled the illustrations. In the past ten years he has done over 150 gorgeous; several for which he won awards. Fortier continues, “I’m always saying Rob is the new Sydney Paget which led to this idea of taking one of Paget’s most popular pieces and having one of our artists do a cover interpretation of it. Which is what Michael Youngblood has done far exceeding our expectations.”

Quality stories and beautiful artwork, the hallmarks of Airship 27.

MARTY QUADE - PRIVATE DETECTIVE

AIRSHIP 27 PRODUCTIONS
Presents
THE RETURN OF MARTY QUADE

During the days of the classic pulps, one of the finest mystery magazines on the stands was 10 DETECTIVE ACES.  Among the revolving series that appeared in that monthly were the cases of tough guy private eye Marty Quade as written by Emile C. Tepperman whose career went from 1933 to 1942.  His most remembered work has been the Purple Invasion Series for Operator 5. Little is known about Mr. Tepperman. He was credited for writing radio broadcasts for programs such as Suspense and Gang Busters. Other than that, his life remains a mystery.

Now Airship 27 Productions is thrilled to bring back this classic pulp character in four brand new adventures written by Gordon Dymowski, Chris Bell, Gene Moyers and Michael Black. From a missing pulp writer to spies on a military base, gumshoe Quade finds himself knee deep in hot dames, flying fists, and lethal lead. But Quade is no ordinary shamus, with both a quick wit and street-smart survival skills; he almost always solves the case.

Brian Loner provides 12 black and white interior illustrations while Airship 27 Productions’ own award Winning Art Director, Rob Davis, the cover, which is our homage to that old classic pulp mag.
